The road in the shadow of the cliffs passes through Duffy’s town and Knowlton Township, whose mayor, Adele Starrs, sees it the same way

“This is a nationally recognized natural landmark,” she said.

But the beauty of the view isn’t the only reason the mayors are opposing a $51.7 million state project to build fences and barriers to prevent rocks from tumbling onto the highway.

They say the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s two-year project, planned to begin in 2020, will create traffic nightmares for truckers, commuters and the 3.7 million yearly visitors to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, most of whom park and hike or gain access from Route 80 on the New Jersey side.
