| Stillwater fire damages newlyweds’ home |
A township couple who have been married for only two months are sorting through what remains from a fire that started late Thursday night and damaged much of the first floor in the home they were renting.
Though there were no injuries resulting from the blaze, homeowner Andy Martin said a Christmas tree and presents belonging to him, his wife, Beth, and his mother, Teri, were destroyed, along with a bookcase containing about 150 books. In addition, Beth Martin said, a television that was the couple’s wedding present to themselves melted off the wall in the fire.
Sussex County Fire Marshal Virgil Rome said the fire call came in at 11:49 p.m. Thursday, dispatching Stillwater, Fredon and Hampton fire departments. The immediate response had the fire under control at 12:33 a.m., about 45 minutes after the initial call.
Other departments called to the home included Andover Township, Byram and Blairstown. Stillwater and Fredon ambulance crews were also at the scene, while Lakeland EMS responded with its “rehab” unit, which provided a warm-up shelter for firefighters and other EMS members at the scene.
