| Sub-station problem causes widespread power outages |
Residents in Sussex and Morris counties as well as two school districts have been affected by a widespread power outage today.
Nearly 90 percent of Jersey Central Power and Light customers in Stanhope and about 28 percent of Byram customers, 1,515 and 1,000 respectively, were without power as of 12:45 p.m., according to the company’s outage map. In Morris County, 2,939 customers in Mount Olive lost power.
Both Stanhope and Byram Township school districts are closed today due to the power outage, according to the schools’ respective websites.
JCP&L spokesman Ron Morano said about 2,600 customers remained without power around noon and attributed the outage to an issue at the Netcong sub-station, which serves the two municipalities. He did not provide an estimate as to when power may be restored in the area but said employees are actively working on the issue.
The cause of the outages is unknown at this time, Morano said.
