Sparta man accused of hitting patrol car, drunken driving

A Sparta man is facing drunken driving charges after police say he struck a patrol vehicle that was pulled over investigating a hit-and-run accident.

Sean Patel, 26, was charged with driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated in a school zone, failure to submit breath samples, reckless driving, careless driving, obstruction, failure to maintain lane, and failure to move over for a stationary emergency vehicle.

At 4:29 a.m. Saturday, March 10, Officer David Northern’s vehicle was stopped along Newton-Sparta Road while the officer was investigating a reported hit-and-run motor vehicle accident near Limecrest Road in front of Domino’s Pizza.

During the investigation, a white Volkswagen Jetta struck the rear of the officer’s patrol car and sideswiped the driver’s side of the patrol car as well, police said.

The vehicle came to a rest parallel to the officer’s patrol car, which had warning lights activated due to the crash investigation, according to police.
