East Rutherford Special Officer Complains She Was Singled Out to Have Gun Returned

Special officer alleges she was asked to turn over firearm when co-officers were not

A special law enforcement officer is pushing back against a rule that requires special officers who are 65 and older to turn in their service weapons — a policy that was put in place when she was 66.

Lois Sciandra, 68, an African American special law enforcement officer with the borough Police Department, said the age restriction policy, which was put into place on March 2, 2015, was used to target her, according to a lawsuit she filed against the borough and the Police Department.

“Upon information and belief, no memorandum was ever circulated within the Borough of East Rutherford Police Department announcing any new requirement requiring S.L.E.O. II’s to surrender their service weapon on their 65th birthday,” the lawsuit states, referring to a special law enforcement officer II. “Instead, Chief [Larry] Minda directed a copy only to Ms. Sciandra.”
