Man on Drugs Walks Into Hawes Elementary School, Looking for Directions

High Man Walks Into Ridgewood Elementary School: Police

A man under influence of a controlled dangerous substance walked into a village school Feb. 28 and was later arrested, police announced Thursday.

Police responded to Hawes Elementary School on a report of a suspicious person who went into the school and asked for directions, said Chief Jacqueline Luthcke.

The man was given directions and left, but a Ridgewood detective went to the school and spoke with the person who called, Luthcke said. A description of the man was given to local police officers.

Police found the man nearby knocking over garbage and recycling cans, the chief said.

The 26-year-old Newark man was arrested and charged with being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance and taken to police headquarters, Luthcke said.
