| Police rescue 2 from fire at Newton home |
Officers from the Newton Police Department rescued two people who had escaped to the porch roof of a Trinity Street house after the home caught fire, police said.
The fire was reported by a passer-by who made a 911 call Saturday at 6:26 a.m.
Patrolmen Russell Post and Jose Morales immediately responded and observed thick smoke and flames coming from the residence, which contains two apartments, one upstairs and one downstairs.
According to police, the downstairs tenants, Ruth Pellek, 35, Jason Staton, 38, and their two young children, a girl, 1, and a boy, 6, were already out of the apartment when the officers arrived.
Morales attempted to climb the stairs leading to the second-floor apartment, but due to the heavy smoke and fire, he was unable do to so.
